Such a good book, loved it. I may have to reread it this year.

I’m reading The Wager, historical nonfiction that is excellent.

Just finished After the Eclipse by Sarah Perry. It’s a memoir about hearing her mother murdered in their home at 12 years old and then the ensuing 13 years it took to find the man who did it and get justice. It was wonderful. She did such a great job of presenting her mother as a full human, not just some tragically murdered victim.

Just finished Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult. It's about a daughter whose mother studied grief in elephants and vanished when the daughter was around 3. Now 10 years later she's searching for her mom trying to figure out if she's still alive. I won't mention any spoilers but the book was ok. I loved the mom's part when she talked about the elephants. I could have done without the other characters actually.

Just started Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier for book club. It is definitely a slow burn so far so I'm hoping it picks up a bit. It goes pages and pages without dialogue and feels like it spends inordinate amounts of time on certain things (descriptions of flowers, for example), so we'll see how it turns out.

Also I've been making my way through a bunch of Sherlock stories as something shorter to read between other things. It's impressive how much of it still holds up very well compared to contemporary fiction in the genre.

This is on my list so let us know if you like it!

I LOVED this book so much!

I enjoyed that. I liked the structure of the book and how it made the point of the novel, but in reverse.

Just finished Between Two Kingdoms by Suleika Jaoud. It was very good. If you read it, watch “American Symphony” on Netflix right after.

Almost done with Congratulations the Best is Over by R. Eric Thomas. So funny.

Curious if you enjoyed Tom Lake. I’m reading it for my book club and am finding it very boring. Hope it gets better.

NP - and I both loved Tom Lake and found it very boring. I think the book got away with a lot with lovely writing. I don't have much patience yet for pandemic books - or tv shows or movies - and this felt very much like one. But that said I did love the setting, and sort of liked the characters. I was interested enough to finish to the end, anyway.

It doesn’t. So boring. I don’t understand the high ratings for this.

Anonymous wrote:Finished Yellowface technically on 12/31. I thought it was okay, but not great enough to be best fiction book of 2023 (per Goodreads). I rated it 3.5 stars.

Today I fished Hello Beautiful. I loved this story, but I generally enjoy stories about families and their complications. 5 stars

Now I'm off to finish The Other Black Girl (half way finished), then Britney Spear's memoir.

I agree on Yellowface. I don’t get the hype.
