Why do the applications ask where else we are applying?

We were asked in the interview too and weren’t going to lie to the interviewer’s face. They want to see, I assume:

1) overlap in schools applicants are applying to
2) to better understand likelihood of attendance

I don't know why they ask, but we answered it and DC was accepted everywhere we applied, so I don't think they use it the way some PP's suggest.
