As a pp said, using the OTC drops ahead of time increases the likelihood of success when a professional attempts to flush the ear. Everyone doesn’t have the same ear wax consistency. Some people need to soften the wax in order for the flushing to work. |
I was more referring to sticking the bulb syringes in your ear. |
Do you go to a gastroenterologist so they can wipe your butt, too? If this is too much for you, then life is probably too much for you. |
My DS was recommended hydrogen peroxide, not mixed with water, by his doctor. Works well for him. |
That softens the wax, but if you have enough to block hearing, you're still going to need to flush out the ear with a decent stream of water. |
If you can’t hear at all in that ear, you shouldn’t wait to get in with an ENT. Most urgent cares should be able to take care of it (call first). My ds gets a lot of wax and sees an ENT regularly. Sometimes he goes to an urgent care if it gets really bad and he needs to get it cleaned asap. |
If it happens that often, why don't you just spend the $10-20 to take care of it yourself? Why do you want go mess with going to urgent care? |
This reminds me of when I started having problems with earwax as a teenager. The first few times I developed my own trick... I basically jumped down 4ft repeatedly until I knocked it out.
It didn't continue to always work. I had my mom take me to the pediatrician, who flushed it out. And then I realized I could do pretty much the same thing at home. |

I actually use a tool that has a scooper in front of it to remove it from my son's ears. His clogs up very quickly. |
Don’t go to urgent care for this, they won’t have the equipment. You want an old-school ENT with the irrigation machine. |
What? An urgent care will absolutely have the equipment. A primary care physician would almost certainly have it too. And if they somehow didn't have an irrigation tool, they'd have curettes to scoop it out. |
Good luck to you when you bust your ear drum with your clumsy attempts! |
How do you know if you have this? |
That would be impressive. Do you similarly go to the ER for drops when they're dry because you can't seem to ignore the voice telling you to shove the dropper into your eye? A little common sense goes a long way. It's too bad that's in such short supply. |
