Did your family talk about money growing up?

They always talked about the importance of saving and living below your means so that money never became a point of contention.

Not really, just that it doesn’t grow on trees! They thought it wasn’t polite to discuss to talk about money or ask how much things cost.

I talk with my friends now about 401, pensions, etc; not how much is in them but just the workings of them. I don’t remember my parents and their friends ever discussing money. We were middle class.

No, and my parents did increasingly well over my childhood but we were never supposed to ask what anything cost or why we were moving to a much nicer neighborhood. I made some really dumb financial mistakes in my 20s and really wish I had some basic financial literacy or just some practical tips to make better decisions. We’re trying to do things differently with our teenagers.
