In business school, we repeatedly covered the history of the American labor movement and particularly how the unions were overwhelmingly responsible for destroying the steel industry in the USA.

lol.. Historically, the unions brought us OSHA, better working conditions and pay. I think those are important things.

Currently, the unions are not doing much for the American workers.

There needs to be a happy medium where workers are paid decently but not so much that it does not make it profitable for the business. Having stated that, part of the problem with US companies is the outrageous compensation that execs get. The disparity between execs and wage earners within a given company is huge in the US compared to the rest of the world.

Execs will make decisions to offshore production to save costs, but they would never think to reduce their pay to save any money for the company so that they could keep some jobs here.

When the competition is a plant in China or India paying workers a fraction of what even the most conservative American would find acceptable, you can't compete on labor prices

JMO but our farmlands shouldn't be held by foreigners. Our apartments and rental units shouldn't be owned by foreigners, our raw materials that are needed for national security should not be owned by foreigners.

That's easily solved with targeted tariffs. Require American steel to call a car made in America. The nice thing about a massive trade imbalance with Japan is that they don't really have any US exports to target

Robots are going to be doing the manufacturing. Also AI is part of the new economic picture. Things will have to change, but starving is probably not one of the changes.

This steel will still be made in America. They aren’t moving Pittsburgh to Japan. Just the corporate profits, if there are any.
