The one about Tik Tok and Kai Cenat. The one about Pitt and Penn State business schools where there are multiple posts saying U Penn and Penn State are rhe same. Others that seem kind of preposterous. It seems a bit like AITA on Reddit. It is believed that precocious youngsters are behind a lot of the crazier posts. Gives them an outlet for their creative writing skills. |
Can you imagine the possibilities! |
Sadly, some of the main trolls are parents with a chip on their shoulder. They really should be teaching their kids better. |
What if they are both malicious and stupid? |
Then send them to the Politics forum. They’ll feel right at home. |
Good one! |
That's super low reward unless they are posting very targeted info for their own parents. Trolling adults in general has higher reward. |
I'm a different person with my kids than with online anons. |
Half the time it's just commenter and reader having different backgrounds and assumptions, and miscommunicating. |
Well, to answer your original post here, OP, maybe just maybe the people posting here know more than YOU know. So while you don't want to hear or read what they have to say, they just might be correct.,
Post your serious (not what you posted here) questions at college confidential and reddit. But try to be less ignorant and judgmental on those foras |
I think it's a mix of political trolls (some possibly paid to spread hype and disinformation), bored/bro kids, private parents (& a few TJ) trying to wage a PR war, and people who think the wisp they heard or sliver the gleaned is universal or worth restating as authority.

Over the years of reading DCUM, there have been times/responses/posters who come off as strategically trying to steer parents away from certain schools.
Which is why I stopped asking for advice/giving stats or information about my DC in this sub-forum. I could post that they are 5.0, #1 rank, four varsity athlete, STEM national award winner, 1600 SAT, debate team captain, student class president and someone will post that they have the admission stats for T100-T200 school. |
Oh, yes. I am the poster above your post, and I forgot to add those. The parents overtly trying to scare people away from the schools their kids are applying for! I'll admit it was tempting, and that I was honest about the dorm quality at kid's school when younger sib was applying, but mostly just stayed silent. But, there are definitely times when I see threads deliberately dinging top schools where I am pretty suspicious of the poster's intent! |
