My 8th grader did a lot more novel reading in 4th grade CES before the lottery. |
| My 6th is doing about 1 to 2 hours a night. More if study hall time is used for social emotional learning. |
| Not much at all for my now 7th grader in either 6th or 7th grade. The big exception is band, for which they have to practice at least 2 hours a week (130 min a week in 7th.) Spanish 1AB in 6th grade was a bit of a rough transition for him and he got a B first semester, after which we got a tutor for him. He's getting As now, so we let go of the tutor, though it may be because his teacher this year is an easier grader too - we're keeping a close eye on it. All other classes (including Algebra this year) are pretty easy for him. He is very academically inclined though and is able to complete a lot of assignments during advisory period at school, so it may be different for others. |
Most English teachers in my middle school hate StudySync. I’m hoping that when the McGraw Hill contract expires, the county will not renew. Middle School students need to read novels. |
Yes, in MCPS. My kid is in a regular, non-magnet program. Just completed his English homework for tomorrow - reading a few chapters of a book and doing a short writing assignment. My kid did read "A Long Walk to Water" in HIGH as well, with a short writing assignment, but currently he has no HIGH HW. |

7th grade. Both this year and last year, almost none. Once in a rare while he needs to finish something, but it never takes long. He says he does it in class. The teachers say they're not supposed to but kid says there's plenty of time in class to do it.
I don't micromanage assignments or study the syllabus, but he has mostly As so I know he's doing the work somehow. |
Not PP, but don’t forget that there are elementary schools with immersion programs. |
Exactly, just like some kids come from wealthy schools that offer math enrichment so they can take honors geometry in 6th. |
I didn’t forget that. Multiple kids joined TPMS from immersion programs this year and were all resolutely told that under no circumstances could they go straight to Spanish 3 in 6th. |
| 0 minutes, he does everything at the end of class or during free time. |
How much do you want them to read for school? My kids read about 1 novel per quarter at school and go all in commenting each page and writing responses and essays and all that school stuff. At home and read 3 novels a week. They don't need more "work" novels. |
DP - The problem for my kid is that the novels they read in school are below grade level, and he has read some of them before. It would be better to do it through reading groups so advanced readers could get above-grade level text. Doing it through whole-group instruction means that those who need more challenge are bored. |
Shh! You're not supposed to talk about it! |
Not enough teachers to go around for that I'd imagine. |
They could do it with reading groups - which coud meet once a week with the teacher, while others did independent work. This is how it was in ES. |
