45 mins is not close by. Try to move her closer! Will you be going to doctor appointments? Even if she can get herself to them via driving or AL facility van, you need to start going. Because as they get older, your parent will process and understand less and less of what they are being told. And what might start as 2-4 appointments a month will soon snowball into more and more as they get older.
I lived 15-20 mins from my parents who were in IL. The first 2-3 months, I was there 3-6 times a week getting them settled. If they had moved 5 years prior, it wouldn’t have been so often. But they were just old enough that they couldn’t handle it like a college student. I had to set up lots of processes and get them comfortable. Once they settled in, at a minimum, the whole family went over once a week to have a meal with them, either at the facility dining room or we’d bring takeout. But I was usually there one more time during the week to check up on them.
