Sibling applications - when to worry?

At GDS we found out about a sibling rejection (for pk) 2 days before the decisions came out. We got a call saying DD wouldn’t be admitted because there were far too many connected kids applying but assuring us that the decision was based on 1) too many kids applying and 2) she was in a preschool that had a strong pk program so they weren’t worried about her coming in for K. Our DD is actually a pretty exceptional kid and doesn’t have any special needs.
On this call they essentially said to apply again next year and she would get in. And she did.

Different school but the same happened to us last year for PK. Fingers crossed my kid gets in this year for K. I believe that if there are issues with admission and parents need to look for another school, they will find out sooner.

Same story for a Sidwell sibling I know, who also did get in for K. Makes sense -- they know you'll apply again, so they take the first borns they don't want to let get away before you.

I’ve seen it go a couple of different ways, usually with younger kids. If you’re way off standards, you may get a call after the interview/play date suggesting a couple of things to work on, or some soft expression of concern. If your kid is completely qualified and there’s a space issue, you’ll get something more like a couple days/hours notice.

Was the kid applying out early from her private? I know a family with a younger sib that didn't get into Sidwell too, but the kid was applying out early from his private. I assumed privates take that into consideration.

Your child will be fine if you are fine. Whatever the decision, this will be in retrospect such a small part of their life.
