I know Sewanee actually does it by class rank rather than by GPA.

Summa: Top 5%
Magna: Next 10%
Cum Laude: Next 10% after that

Not helpful to OP. OP the schools usually make this very clear. VERY clear because students will argue forever with the registrar over such things - signed summa cum laud SLAC (out of 400) and cum from law school

I think it is helpful to know this to answer the part of OPs questions asking if the distinction matters. Someone who doesn't have it may have gone to a school that doesn't do it.
