+1 I just look around within a mile or two of our hotel/rental. We enjoy walking to restaurants.

Yelp or other online resources. I usually make a list in my notes app on my phone. Once I'm on vacation, I'll ask a local. I try to be specific, like, "I'm craving Mexican tonight. What's your favorite?" or "I heard Los Tios was good. What are your thoughts?" I've found that locals love to tell you about their favorite spots.

That's how I found one of the best hole-in-the-wall sandwich places in Nashville. If I had driven by that place, I would have skipped it ASAP. But I had 2 locals tell me about it and I gave it a shot.

I use Reddit and compare with online reviews and then I check the menu, if available. Google, yelp and TripAdvisor are stacked with fake reviews. And many restaurants pay or comp meals to be on blogs/online lists. If you are going to a city with a newspaper, you can check their reviews. Eater, Grub Street, thrillist, the infatuation are ok, but they have their issues. I miss chowhound.

I have found that it's getting harder to sniff out the unicorn: tasty, local, enjoyable, friendly and easy on the budget restaurants. Tripadvsior and Google reviews both have their uses but you also need to be realistic given the fake reviews. But you also need to be realistic about the non-existent difference between 4.6 stars and 4.4 star ratings. I wouldn't trek across a city for a 4.7 rated bakery when a 4.3 is right around the corner. Learned this the hard way too many times.

Check with friends for recommendations, and local food bloggers are usually a good source too.
