| It isn't your problem. If they get popped by police on patrol for expired tags, then that is their bill, not yours. People are allowed to park on the street, OP. As long as it does not block your driveway/parking spaces, it's all legal unless there is a no parking sign. |
The OP's neighbor is moving the vehicles regularly so not long-term. The issue is lack of proper registraton. I have a neighbor who parks a properly registered vehicle on the street and does not move it for weeks (probably even months) at a time. Completely legal. Pisses you off, I know. |
In most jurisdictions, it’s illegal when the vehicles are not properly registered, with current plates. |
BS. I park my car with expired VA inspection and emissions tag on a public street in McLean for six months without any issues. |
| We had a stolen car ditched in front of our house last year, about a half mile from the metro. We called after 1 week and learned there is a 72 hour abandonment period before they'll take action. It was reunited with the owner. |
Just because you didn't get caught, doesn't mean it isn't illegal. |
| I would tow them. But that’s easy when your H owns a tow truck. I dunno what normal people do are supposed to do. Sounds awful. |
I guess the difference is that if you live in a high end neighborhood, police will look the other way. |
| I’d guess that they may be running a used car refurbishing and resale business. Legality/licensing of those depends on jurisdiction. I don’t know anywhere that allows vehicles without current tags to sit around, particularly on the street. |
This would be my guess too. My neighbors are running an auto shop from home and park cars awaiting repair on the street. Beware that if your neighbor can’t park cars the street, they might resort to parking vehicles in the yard. |
| Probably time to move. Sounds like a downscale street. |

We had a renter next door a few years ago who was running some kind of used car sales/refurbishment business (not licensed or legal). Our HOA doesn’t allow for cars to be parked on the street for more than a day, so they parked the cars in the backyard. We live in an exurb in large lots and our cul de sac has no real neighbors behind us, so we feared retaliation if we called the cops.
After they moved out, we did see a car parked out back and called the police. Turns out they had a friend squatting there while it was unoccupied. The next renters received some threatening notes directed at the former tenants, so it was probably good that we never snitched on their activities! |
