Turkey Trot Etiquette?

Anonymous
The Alexandria Turkey Trot has an elite field. It's not unreasonable to ask that walkers refrain from jamming up the start of the race. This is basic race etiquette and is perfectly reasonable to ask when people are paying for race. There's no reason for walkers and slow joggers to be starting at the front of a 5000 person race.

How?

You didn't know enough to self-seed yourself at the front.

Hard to self seed at the front when walkers are blocking the front.

Fine. Complain to the organizers and not us.

No race that has "turkey trot" in the title has an "elite field."

I'm not doubting you are a good runner, but lord, get over yourself. If you need an ego boost this badly, go ask your mom if you are good looking.

Agree with you Op! I also did the race and couldn’t believe the number of people strolling down the middle of the street making it almost impossible to run. It was exhausting going around them and I had a hard time staying with my daughter and her friend. I thought they were very rude to walk a 5 mile race without making any effort to stay out of the way just a little bit. I also don’t understand why anyone would want to walk 5 miles. It is too long to walk. Also, it is a trot and a race not a walk. I wish they would ban walking. Who walks a race anyway? Go for a walk after you eat or something. Don’t ruin it for everyone else.

Ha. I’ve run big races where you register with your predicted time and get placed with a specific time group at the start. I signed up for the 7:15 pace group for a ten miler and people were walking within the first 2 miles of the race, and yes, blocking my path. Just assume at any crowded race there will be dumb oblivious people, including those who severely overestimate their capabilities.

Was this the Army Ten Miler? I ran it for the first time this year having run bunches of other local road races (a half, 10Ks, and 5Ks). The ATM was the first race where I was flabbergasted by the number of people walking, in groups, in the middle of the road as opposed to moving to the right (or even to either side). Even my local Turkey Trot people knew not to do that!

A 5k is only 3.1 miles.

It’s a trot. Not a race.

And lol to an “elite field”.

Why were you so late to show up?

*trot. Not a race.

Who runs a “trot” and thinks it’s an actual race?
