What’s your frequency for buying new?

Same here except buying “new” means a pre-owned vehicle that’s 2-3 years old (much cheaper than buying new).

I buy Toyotas and Hondas that are 10 years old and drive them into the ground, which can take a while. I only bought a new one when I was fresh out of college.
My wife and teenagers are probably waiting for me to die so they can buy some brand new cars

Is there a particular frequency or mileage limit for cars where you buy new?

Twice, 16 years apart.

And then drive until it would cost more to fix than I'd get in trade-in value. Generally 8-10 years. Though, I had my last car for almost 15 years (and yes, bought used -- it was two years old and only had about 6k miles on it). It was a Toyota -- those things run forever and are dirt cheap to fix.
I think this is very smart. I’ve only bought two cars new in my 64 years, both times being under unusual circumstances. I currently have two cars that are 2013 and one that is 2021 (purchased new).

This is me, only two new cars in my 62 years. Some were gifts from the ILs. More recently I bought an EV new because the make/model I wanted hadn't been around long enough to buy it used.

Every three years but we aren’t trying to get the best deal or anything like that. We want nice cars.

Every 10 or so years.

+1. I drive a 2008 car that is in great shape. 95k miles. Perfect for city driving.

In my household the "new car" is a 2010 edition purchased in 2009.

Last car was a 2000 Ford Focus, bought used in 2008 or so, that was a complete piece of crap by the end and died entirely on inauguration day 2016. Bought a new 2016 hybrid Rav4 when the 2017s hit the lot, but we only put ~5k miles/year on it so we'll keep it until somebody carjacks us and wrecks it in a joyride, I guess. I have no concerns about it from a mechanical or "safety features" standpoint, but my next car will have that little button on the trunk door that shuts it for you. Those are neat.

Have you tried to buy a car recently, because this isn’t true anymore. Better to buy brand new with the warranty.

I feel like so many people who post these types of things on DCUM are really bad with money, wasteful, and are trying to fulfill their shortcomings with "stuff" because they think they are somehow "owed". The same people are crowing about needing financial aid, and looking for handouts.

Same with the posts re: how much do you make and how do you spend it. Manage your money wisely, people, and learn to save it!

I gave up buying new cars many years ago. Now I buy very nice used cars generally cars coming off a 3 year lease with about 25k miles. The dealer certifies it and extends the warranty a year or so. My current car, a Porsche Macan, was a dealer demo that I bought when it only had 5k miles on it. I’ve had it three years and it’s been a great car. It’s got 38k miles on it and I’ll keep it another five years.

The new ev tech is much better so used is no longer a deal unless you are someone who still wants to buy gas guzzling

+1 Also want to add that you will get a better rate if you're financing.
