Soy for idiots

OP here. Thanks to 16:53! I'm off to buy the sweetened kind, and will probably pick up some rice milk too.

16:53 here - one more thing - I found that the aseptic (non-refrigerated) packages had a "beany" taste, and I preferred the refrigerated kind. Not all brands are the same, but that was my experience. Happy shopping!

Try hemp milk. You avoid both soy and nuts that way and it is incredibly healthy for a child that age -- lots of good fats. Recommended to us by the dietitian at our ped GI's office.

What about hemp, almond, or coconut milk? Soy is just as bad as dairy if there is an allergy.

Whole Foods brand rice milk as the best flavor per my 3 year old if that helps at at all.

15:14, what were the reasons for avoiding soy milk? Does that go for yogurt, cheese and everything else?

The doctor explained that this is being hotly debated in the medical community right now, even among top experts. Some think it is totally safe, based on decades of people drinking and eating soy with no apparent problems. Others point to the estrogen-like properties of soy and say it is linked to many, many problems. It is strangely similar to the BPA debate just a few years ago - some docs weren't worried at all because babies have been using BPA bottles for decades with no problem, but most countries did in fact ban BPA in baby products in the past few years.

Basically, I decided if it is this much in debate among the medical experts who really know what they are talking about, I'm just opting out and going with the safest possible route. My son gets rice milk. The fat is a minor problem, but we give him plenty of fats through the rest of his diet.

Our Ped told us to use soy toddler formula. We buy it on diapers.com because it is hard to find in stores.

I agree with everything in moderation. I think the reason that soy is becoming a problem now a days, is that it is in EVERYTHING! So, its not just a tofu stir fry that you are eating, its in your cereal, your granola bar, even some orange pekoe tea! (WHY?!) anyway, eating soy 1-2 times per day is probably healthy, but more than that is probably too much.
