DP .. From my experience it really is based on merit. DS in a freshman in TJ and I know a lot of kids from who are in TJ. I also know a few kids from his MS who were really good and sure shot to get into TJ but for whatever reason they did not do well in the test. So PP .. it is not a lottery. Sour grapes .. sure |
Always worth applying - good exercise for kids in putting together application and essays, recommendations. And good perspective for kids.
If your kid gets in, then you can decide if it is worth going to TJ. |
Sadly half the applicants have straight A's in LLV AAP at the wealthiest schools so seems like a longshot. |
Not if you are Asian. Asian kids would need better than a minus, internship from a big firm, run a small business, be a champ at something - spelling bee champion, rank at least in the top five of sports, be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

This is a typical sour grapes poster. The kids that get in are completely amazing but it's also true there are probably twice as many capable kids are there are seats. Sadly some parents whose kids are overlooked for one reason or another always like to take a swipe at TJ. |
I'm the PP that called it a lottery. I went to MIT, I'm not encouraging my child to apply so no sour grapes here. I think that Fairfax County would rather that it is a lottery. You meet the minimum standards then we lottery to try to attain equal race mixture. I thought most people saw this transparently. |
Lottery is only fair. We need more inclusive programs and ensure that schools including higher ed balance admissions.
|
It’s all heading to non merit based system
|
Maybe we can have avg or less athletic players in the nba or pga. It’s not inclusive.
|
Definitely but probably depends on their essay. |
It's the same for all races since selection is race blind. |

There shouldn’t be a selection process that is not transparent. If it’s based on lottery then it’s better to be lucky than ….
|
Oh jeez. Do you complain about every selection process? "Transparent" is a fool's wish. |
lol numbers don’t lie. Hold onto merit.
