Anyone working in MCPS right now has logged into the retirement system to check their date. I started as a first year teacher in August twenty years ago yet I have a December retirement date.
Years ago I would have told you that I'd wait until June but you can be sure I'll be out the first date I can that December. MCPS is an absolute dumpster fire and most of us cannot wait to retire. |
Yes, your retirement date resets if you take certain types of leave. Between maternity leave and long term medical leaves, mine has reset 4x. Mine is in March a decade from now. I also used to think I would never retire during the school year, but unless something dramatically improves, I plan to do so rather than suffer extra months with no meaningful benefit to me. |
As a teacher I can also confirm hearing this exact same conversation from staff who are close to retirement. Once you are eligible for full retirement with about 1/2 pay, it means if you stay on you are basically working for 50% of your salary (plus medical benefits). Why up with the disrespect? The system has no respect for our professionalism anyways. We are just meant to be replaced anyways. You do need to let HR know in advance when you plan to leave. There are meetings and paperwork to fill out. |
Same! On bad days, I like to log in and see what my monthly pension will be. I also have a December retirement date. I'm in a non classroom based position but I am still unsure which date I will decide. I have about 4 years to make my final decision but am leaning towards the Dec date.

| I hope the one at Blair HS retires. She’s had a lot of issues as of late and has certainly been around long enough to retire. Time for a change there. |
What "issues" are you alluding to? She's a strong leader. |
