Depends. Changes each year based on the trip.
This year we are missing the last three days before winter break. In the past we’ve flown back from spring break trips on Tuesday or Wednesday following Easter. If we can save thousands, we will. Life is too short, and the reality is your kid isn’t missing anything in grade school…only missing math in middle school…and high school is a crapshoot. |
They don't do much of anything in school in ES anyway. It's mostly busy work especially if your kid can read. |
| Do you let the teacher know in advance if it’s for vacation? Because I know it will be considered unexcused either way? |
|
My senior will miss the Wednesday, Thursday and 1/2 day Friday before Winter break.
|
| Do it and hope your kid isn’t fine w the consequences. Be prepared for them to fail if they won’t do make up work. Use your brain. |
| Most teachers expect really low attendance the day before a holiday break, so that is the best day to extend |
You’re a clown |
If that’s the case why do folks bother sending kids and teachers bother planning lessons? Because in fact kids are missing stuff. |

We pull them out for 5 days, once a year. The school goes berserk on us. My oldest is in 2nd and the others in preschool (preschool doesn’t care).
I will say that my kid got really sick multiple times last year and we ended with 16 days absent (4 days were vacation). The school called me weekly the last 6 weeks telling me to send the kid no matter what, even if they’re vomiting or have a fever. They said they’d take roll and then we could pick them up after. That pissed me off. No wonder my kid got sick so much. Multiple times last year kids vomited in the classroom. School said they were going to lose accreditation if we hit 18 days. |

I’m a high school teacher. As long as the family isn’t asking me to do an ounce of extra work, I don’t really care. I post all my notes and assignments, so the student can keep up while the family is on vacation. If the student falls behind for an unexcused absence, however, I hope the family assumes the responsibility and doesn’t place it on me. If your trip doesn’t add more work to my overloaded plate, then vacation away. |
| We did in ES, once for a week trip to Disney (k and 2nd grade) but usually for family events (weddings for example). By MS, one was in a magnet, then both were in a magnet for HS and we did not pull them out for anything. |
Do it now. Can’t do it in middle school. They miss too much. But, at least do it for something good. |
That Friday is a full day in MCPS. |
The last day or 2 of a quarter is good. Day before winter breaks, half days. |
