Maybe define good and what that means to you. Likely to get a score she’ll want to submit to Yale? Above average for her school? Above average for the nation? Does good “compared to other kids” mean compared only to other kids who are like her, or to kids in general?

I'm trying to figure out if she can be competitive for a selective college and if this will encourage her to apply herself/practice to improve her score since this was taking the test cold, with no prep. She is an extremely hard worker and is very independent so I was just trying to figure out where she is falling in this competitive high school area of MCPS. Thanks!

With no prep you looking at low 1300 score.

Just for reference, University of Maryland has an average attending student SAT score of 1445. Admitted students is likely higher.

So unless she makes some massive improvements, you are looking at test optional especially at "selective" schools.

Note that kids with perfect 1600 are regularly rejected so scores are not everything.

I was told UMD doesn't want to see SAT scores below 1380. So OP's DD has a little work to do just to get to that. With some prep, should be fine but I wouldn't jump to visiting very selective colleges just yet.

Correct. 2023 grad with 36 ACT, 4.0 UW, 4.8+ WGPA, 4 year varsity athlete, club leadership, jobs, etc. and was rejected/WL at every Ivy League / T10 school they applied to. As were almost all their unhooked classmates with similar stats.

For selective college, kids should have a 1550+ SAT by this time in their Junior year

This - My kid scored 1330 - not enough for MD commended but great for seeing what the one weak area he has so he can do hopefully do better on SAT.

Ha! My kid got 1310 but admittedly "bombed geometry" (yeah, she didn't practice for the test) since it had been 2 years. It's nice that it shows what to improve on! She's happy with her score = I'm happy

From Ivies, yes.

There are a lot more "selective" schools, even if you just count the ivy plus schools. There are fewer than 1000 kids getting 1600 each year.

1000 seems low! My kid knows of 3 in their class at one high school with a 1600. Kid thinks there's probably more.
I haven't looked to see if the # of 1600s is published each year.

9th grade dc got 1190 and the app indicates he is in the 94th percentile for the state of Maryland,

The state average is 846, US average is 822 and all test takers average is 824.

However, the district average is 1007.
Your school average is shown in the app.

That's not surprising or impressive enough. Too many kids already who have those stats. Should have paid for private - would have been admitted to an ivy. Ask me how I know.

Well the funny thing is we care more about the education than a name. Just trying to pass on the reality of Ivy admissions. On a full ride at UMD.

Isn’t the PAAT on a different scale from the SAT?

Slightly, yes. It has a lower top score because it is a tad bit easier.
