DC had a couple teachers grade assignments today. They are not showing up in Studentvue yet but we can see them in Canvas.

Canvas has never automatically synced to StudentVue. The teachers must hit a button for it to sync. One of the big problems is that sometimes a late assignment does not sync if there are only a few students with a newly graded assignment. The IT people told me this is a common problem with late assignments. Because I can't trust the system to sync late assignments, I put them all in by hand. I also ask my students to please double check their StudentVue accounts frequently and let me know if they find any discrepancies.

I love the part where MCPS IT told you the problem is common and they didn't solve the problem!

No. Teachers do not have a few extra days to complete late assignments. The idea is that most students will complete assignments on time therefore it won't be difficult for teachers to grade a few late papers.

That is the theory.

Also, it’s not as simple as just entering a grade. Once the individual grades are all entered, the teachers have to open another part of Synergy to enter WSH and then save those. Only then can the final grade be posted. The closer to the deadline to post, the slower Synergy runs.

What is the difference between "teacher grades" and "school grades"?

Teacher posts grades. School has a day to troubleshoot any classes that didn’t post correctly or resolve random issues.

DS still had a grade book issue with it not being updated and reflecting graded all tasks assignments in a way that changes his grade. He has asked the teacher multiple times and I’ve reached out previously. Teacher says it’s a syncing problem between synergy and canvas. Is there still time to fix this?

I always unofficially closed the gradebook about a week before with most recent assignments going onto the next quarter. Dealing with incomplete grades and last minute nonsense was too much. Yes kids had ample time for make ups and retakes. At some point the grading period ends and a grade is earned. Do not encourage your child to be a part of the last minute scramble it doesn't help.

PP here. I take your point about the last minute scramble and the need for finality, but the unsynced grades were from weeks earlier and DS has been asking since then. And I asked a couple weeks ago. The teacher seemed certain the grades would eventually sync but that has not occurred. I care about the semester grade but the current quarter's grade will affect the semester grade (A vs B). The unsynced grades are showing as 0 while canvas shows they should be 100%.

Is there really nothing to be done? Is there still time for the syncing to happen or if it hasn't happened by now, then does that mean there's some other issue?

I think it's reasonable to follow up at this point. They can always put in a grade change form if the grades have already been locked.

My kid asked his teacher about a retake they had taken 2 days prior to the end of the quarter and the teachers keeps saying they can’t change the grade the system is “locked” any mcps teachers out there…is this true? The updated grade change it from a B to an A.
