100% the same where my daughter works. She took a weekend off because we were out of town. Put in the a month in advance.
They demanded she come in on a Saturday (took Thur-Sun off). She told them I requested this time off twice, and I am out of town for a family obligation. They still demanded and told her she would be using a no call/no show. She responded I am an 8 hour drive away, and will not be in the area until late Sunday night. I told her to stop responding. She was working 5 days per week. Now she's been reduced to 1-2 days. Oh well. She can find another job if it doesn't pick back up. They have high turn over for a reason. |
| I would respond back with an “I quit” |
| OP keep us posted on how it ends! Does she end up quitting? Does the manager realize her mistake or continue to mismanage? |
| As someone who works in public service and manages people, if someone has approved leave, threatening a 'no call / no show' is bullying and doesn't make a bit of sense. This is not a way to retain staff. And, also, the service industry is so burnt out they don't even both to try to retain good people. |
This is exactly what my DD says happens at every restaurant job she's ever worked. I guess I was just ignorant of how the restaurant business works. I had no idea that they didn't get a free meal or a free uniform. My DD got 1 free shirt and had to buy any additional shirts. She also had to buy the specific shoes on her own and specific pants. She gets 15% off food one time per shift but not outside of work as a customer. She can order her one meal to go, though. |
Maybe not all, but it's really common. I've heard tons of stories like this. Complain about anything and they cut your shifts. Finding substitutes is your own problem and if the sub doesn't show, you are disciplined. To say nothing of harassment, difficult customers, and being on your feet all the time. |
| It always comes down to good managers versus bad managers. My 16 year old has a part time job and his boss keeps scheduling him for shifts in the middle of the school day, despite having been told in person and in writing that he is only available after school and weekends. Shitty manager told him to find a co-worker to swap shifts. Its utter nonsense. |

This. You can’t generalize. |
| Probably they are looking to get her to quit so they called her in knowing she wouldn't be available and would have a reason to write her up. Maybe think she's faking about the appointment. Could be anything. For whatever reason they don't value her. |
| This isn't restaurant specific, it's all jobs. Had a professional job like that. Tell her to find a new job. |
Come on. A lot of restaurants have management like this. Don’t pretend it’s some isolated case. Customers frequently suck, management frequently sucks. Well managed restaurants (and decent pay) with decent clientele generally don’t have high turnover. |

Did your DD pushback and tell her manager/owner that HE approved of her request 2 months ago?
Why didn't Lan, who called out last minute it, get "reprimanded " instead? He's the one who was "no call, no show". Not your DD. Sounds like displaced anger on the manager's part. Give it a few days to cool off and see what happens. It might not be as bad as it seems |
| We should name and shame. Surely there are some well ran places. |

My kid had a lifeguarding job. Told them in writing when he was hired that he couldn't work after a certain Saturday because he was leaving for college on Sunday. Reminded the boss multiple times.
They scheduled him so that he didn't have to work on his last Saturday, so we planned a family gathering to say goodbye. Then on Friday they announced a mandatory staff meeting on Saturday to work out schedules. He messaged his boss that he would not be able to make it as he had other plans and that Friday would be his last day as arranged. His boss called him up and fired him. From a job he had already quit and had his last day for. Then they had the meeting and emailed him that they had given him more hours. He emailed back that he had left the state, and that he was no longer available. So, he got fired again. |
