Moving to a place where you're not as financially secure

As a visiting nurse, I can tell you Newport has very wealthy and very poor people. Never know who I’ll see when I go to Newport. Maybe a rundown project apartment with bedbugs and broken screens, maybe an Ocean Drive mansion with an old geezer complaining about the glare from the window with the breathtaking view. Since the Navy moved though, decades ago, the middle class moved too, mainly to neighboring Middletown and Portsmouth.

My DH grew up poor in Newport RI, and while he has some shocking stories about the snobby super rich there, he also has lifelong middle and lower class friends who are wonderful. It’s really like any city - all kids of people. It’s just that the very rich make up a larger percentage than many other places.

I’m the pp whose DH was poor from Newport. If you don’t think it has projects, you are sheltered.

Would 7.5m net worth be ok in Newport? Or poor?

After all, you know that there are plenty of very wealthy families in the southern US.

Everything will be fine. The best way to make friends is to be friendly and open-minded.

This is a little naive of you- there are separate countries in Asia and Europe that have more in common with each other in terms of customs and culture than parts of the south and parts of New England. And wealth and status and their language and trappings are different everywhere! Unless you mean new money- new money is the same around the world.

Ooooh like which countries?

I have lots of family in Newport and grew up nearby. My cousins are all true middle class - teachers, nurses, social workers, construction. Not a snob among them.
