And I believe they should stay where they are--inclusive of both. |
The problem with social "science" is that the scientific method requires replicability. |
Humanities is a major where DCUM mocks you because you are never going to get a job and if you do it pay nothing.
Social Science is a major where DCUM mocks you and says it’s not a rigorous or real science and it’s just woke nonsense. |
I have degrees in humanities & social sciences. A big difference is in type of evidence you use. When writing a social science paper, you can barely say anything without backing it up with a reference to a peer-reviewed journal article. On the other hand, I got a master’s in philosophy from one of the top universities in the world, & when we wrote papers, we were told to minimize the references & use our own ideas & logic to pick apart some idea. |
Philosophy precedes science, in fact. Science used to be known as "natural philosophy." The natural sciences broke off from philosophy during the 18th century. The social sciences emerged in the 19th century. |
I think this is too simplistic:
https://keydifferences.com/difference-between-social-science-and-humanities.html For instance it says social science is objective, has a scientific approach and has a positivist conception of truth, while the humanities are subjective, have an analytical approach and a relativist conception of truth. Many social scientists think true objectivity in the study of human life is an illusion, so they're closer to the humanities in that respect. Meanwhile, analytic philosophy (humanities) is aligned in orientation to the natural sciences, and that's the dominant stream in philosophy. |

History is borderline humanities/social sciences. |
Yes: it uses evidence and methods from both of those disciplinary approaches. |
Are there any methods used in humanities only but not social sciences and vice-versa? |
Another border-line case: communications. Rhetoric clearly fits under humanities, but a lot of communications studies are similar to sociology. |
Anthropology is said to be the most humanistic of the social sciences and the most scientific of the humanities. |
