WWYD in this situation?

Leave! When my company was acquired it was very clear they wanted their people to run everything even though my company’s performance was far superior but they were bigger and needed to make an acquisition. They replaced many top performers which led others to leave because they saw what was happening. Within two years my old company’s performance really suffered.

Easy on the OP, pal. They have been at the company for 20 years with a lot of emotional linkages. Not every lives and breathes corporate cutthroat nihilism.

At your level promotions are not merit based.
Either people are cut-throat and push their way to the top of its “who you know”.

Your new boss is likely successful because of his tribe, and you are not a part of it.

Get out while you are ahead. You don’t necessarily need to quit, but you need to actively be looking for somewhere else to go asap! It’s only going to get worse from here.

This is OP. The sentiment here seems to be negative but I am trying to figure whether things will be stable or this is just the tip of an iceberg. This is the only real job I have ever known since I was 25 years old. In some ways it has been very comfortable and at the moment still is. The thought of having to give up what I have built and start someplace else seems really exhausting at this stage with young children. I also have many friends at the company (although fewer due to recent departures/retirements), and the staff who work for me, many of whom have worked for me for more than 10 years, are like extended family. I would be content to go about my business and collect my paycheck if that is possible. There must be some stories of these types of situations having positive outcomes?

OP, in your initial post, you answered your own question. Employees from the other company are being promoted. I know in my field (accounting), when you are merged, you are a dead man walking. Unless you have a very specific, difficult to find skill (e.g. stste and local tax).

My DH was in this situation before. The new bosses bring in their own people to fill key slots and the acquired people are let go. That’s been our experience.
