"It was not immediately known if the daycare was licensed. A search on the state's website did not show a license issued for Happy Happy Daycare in San Jose."

Okay and as a parent wouldn't you first look to see if they're licensed?

You are speaking from a position of privilege.

People who send their kids to unlicensed day cares are people who need to work and don't have options

This. Too many parents are in the position of choosing potentially risky childcare situations vs. not being able to work to feed and house their kids. It’s a gamble either way and frankly atrocious in a country as rich as America.

Or maybe the choice to not have kids you can't afford. That's another choice often overlooked.

No, it's eugenics. Only rich people can have kids? No. That's not the solution.

Would solve a heap of problems. Being a parent should be a privilege.

This. Unlicensed day cares are cheaper. But I agree. I would never ever leave my kid at a home daycare with a pool. But I could afford many different options. All the options, really. I'm sure those parents thought the providers would keep their kids safe. Tragic.

That whole street has big pools covering the whole backyard right outside the back doors of the houses. No fences in sight. Is it not a rule?

So you are blaming the parents and the state. What about the irresponsable day care providers?

No. People need to take responsibility for the kids they birth. Otherwise they suck. Be a day care worker and get paid to watch your kid and others to keep them safe.

I generally think this argument is ridiculous, but also, abortion politics in the US is driven on removing that choice. So you’re really arguing for abstinence for a whole lot of people, regardless of marital status. So much regressive thinking here it’s hard to pick it apart.

Really? I know so many rich with messed up kids. It is privilege indeed to pump out messed up kids one after another just because one is rich.

Try this with people should “take responsibility” for the roads they drive on, the foods they eat, the houses they buy, the risk of job loss, etc. …

Oh wait, taxpayers subsidize our roads, pay for FDA inspectors, give deductions to homeowners, pay for unemployment rolls, etc.

You live in a society. We fund things that make our country a better place to live like (in theory) safe infrastructure and food, incentivizing home ownership, a safety net for job loss, and so on. The only reason people try to make having a family some sort of individualized endeavor is so we can morally shame women for “not keeping their legs closed” or guilt them into leaving the workforce so we can have women providing the unpaid labor of child rearing in this country. It’s the whole reason most people are ok contributing to schools as of K, but children age 0-5 are not their problem because sexism.

And yes, I realize daycare workers are underpaid women for the most part as well. But the nature of childcare is that parents can’t afford to truly pay a living wage to someone while they then try to earn their own living wage. The whole thing is set up to fail without any government subsidy, which includes better wages for workers.

It’s working out so well! Packs of roaming feral kids terrorizing cities. Let’s keep doing the same thing over and over.

That’s so tragic. I see that the pool is fenced off and there is a cover partially on the pool. So it’s a question of supervision and it looks like the man in the police car was the one in charge at the time . There was an incident in Maryland, where a child drowned in a pool at a licensed daycare. I think pool was unsecured at the time. Imo it’s an issue of supervision and not purely of Licensing.

Nannies cost a lot of money and most people cannot afford one.
