| Ovarian cyst! |
| Lots of things are more painful than natural childbirth, because of the acute focused nature of the pain. Ovarian cysts and kidney stones are just two that come to mind. |
Where did someone say that a tattoo hurts more than labor? Can't find. |

For me:
1. tattoo 2. unmedicated birth 3. broken ulna and radius (two bones in your forearm) 4. herniated disc in lower back/referred pain My arm went un-set for about 36 hours until I had surgery, so occasionally I would get flashes of broken bone rubbing broken bone. I cannot even describe how awful that felt. And the back thing. The worst part of that was that I never knew exactly when I'd get a shooting, stabbing pain down my butt and leg. And it interfered with every aspect of my life and I never knew when it would end or get better - it went on for months and months and months. In contrast, both the tattoo and the birth had to end at some point. I think knowing that made it much more tolerable. |

Not sure how much credence I'd give to the ice test. I'm sensitive to heat and cold so I don't do well with those. I can't hold ice for more than a few seconds and I use potholders to pick up anything on the stove. But injury pain, I'm more ok with. I didn't take any pain meds after having my wisdom teeth out, not even Tylenol. And I hiked 2 miles down a mountain and along a road to the car after badly spraining my ankle and several ligaments in my foot at the summit. (10 months later, still not 100% healed.) That one may have been enabled by shock though; I spent the next two days in agony on the couch, feeling like my foot was being crushed in a vise. I didn't have anything stronger than Tylenol with me but if I had, I probably would've taken it. In retrospect, I should've gone to the local ER ...
I haven't had a kid yet but I hope it's not worse than the foot! That was certainly the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. |

Honestly, the worst pain in my life is menstrual cramps. It feels as if someone is wringing my insides like a wet towel, and sometimes literally knocks me to the ground. As others have said, pain seems more tolerable if it's got a purpose, or an end in sight. Cramps are the worst of all worlds. Mine last for most of a week. I worry about the long-term damage I'm doing to my stomach and liver with all the OTC painkillers I take.
I would rather sprain an ankle, get stung by a tropical jellyfish, or give birth. |
Do you have endometriosis? |

My worsts are bad sprains and broken bones. I'd do natural childbirth over those any day. Gallstones were similar to labor pain but unrelenting for sometimes hours.
My own theory is that women can handle sustained pain better than men, but men can handle the initial pain of an injury better. I have nothing to back this up, just experience and witnessing men handle pain. |

-2. tattoo (whole lower back)
0. Random sprained ankle 1. Sciatic pain during pregnancy 2. ruptured cysts 3. 21 hours unmedicated w/4 minute long contractions 4. passing a kidney stone/ kidney infection 5. waking, unmedicated endoscopy of my temporal-mandibular joint 6. Pancreatitis (w/ 6 hour emergency boat evacuation + 14 hour flight) Tattoo was NOTHING. Like getting bug bites with an occasional tapping on the bones with a very tiny hammer (albeit for 4 hours) |
