“unsubscribing” is driving me nuts!

It's a legality that companies must abide or risk fines, and even though it's a bit time-consuming, it's the best way to keep your inbox clear. Companies add you to multiple lists, so you have to unsubscribe from all, either in one visit to the company website, or by clicking the link in the email.

As a PP said, if they don't have a link to unsub, it's illegal and if you're feeling litigious, you could report them. Sometimes they're putting the link in white font so it's unreadable. Oh the tricks.

But what if you click on "unsubscribe" and go through all the steps and then you still keep getting messages from them? These are from reputable companies (e.g., I'm going through this now with StubHub). So frustrating and seems illegal but I don't know who to report it to, if anyone.

Unsubscribe doesn’t always happen immediately. I’d say give it a week or so, and see if it tapers off. It’s probably not illegal if these are reputable companies. Most people don’t read the privacy policies and such, and they usually mention that by using the site, you’re giving them permission to send you emails— as well as permission to their family of brands. I often take a few minutes, go through my recent emails, and unsubscribe. If the emails don’t stop or the seem really tangential to something I deliberately signed up for, I report them as SPAM.
I tend NOT to provide my email to a company that asks for an email to unsubscribe. Those go to SPAM
PP, note that if you have a future transaction— with StubHub for example— you become an active customer and the emails may start again. DP

Remember back when covid started, within 2 weeks, literally every company you ever gave your email address to sent out an email with their detailed covid plan?

Set up a separate email address for subscriptions and purchases. I kept my old AOL address, and I use it for web sites that I don’t need to hear from again and I know will spam me once I give them my address. I still occasionally go through and unsubscribe and mark stuff as junk in that account, but it serves to keep my main email account free for more important email. I most just block/delete because I know there’s nothing of real importance in that inbox.

My DH complains about this too, and deletes EVERYTHING and then whines he can’t find things.

For PROMOTIONS, can you guys explain a bit more? I have the promotions tab with emails in it, but when I go to INBOX, those same emails still appear. Do yours only appear in PROMOTIONS?

In gmail I have PRIMARY PROMOTIONS and SOCIAL tabs. I mostly only read PRIMARY and only get notifications on my phone if I get email in that box. I can and do look at PROMOTIONS and SOCIAL but only when I feel like it. It's great having my email sorted this way. There is also a SPAM folder but I typically only get less than 10 or so per week in there and only clear it out every few weeks.

Yep. Mild interest in a company and now I get 70 emails a day. And texts are worse.

And now there are so many independent store for every single separate item. Far from going to a big box store, each separate store item has a company trying to make $200 off you.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha this is so true.

Random company you were interested in their vitamins.

“We assure you we have instituted the safest Covid 19 procedures both in our lab, and manufacturing.” Okay cool.
