If independents were motivated to vote in primaries, they'd register as democrats. |
So independents are congenitally apathetic? Interesting theory you have there… If the Democratic Party wasn’t terrified of this ballot initiative, it wouldn’t be filing frivolous lawsuits to prevent it from coming before voters. |
| As an Independent m I registered as a Democrat for just this reason. |
You should have no problem with this ballot initiative then. |
I don't! Why do you think this is some kind of gotcha? |
|
This is bullsh#t, won’t do much of anything. You’ll still need to run as a Democrat if you want a chance of winning.
I want ranked choice voting! |
Nadeau wouldn’t even run |
| It would also bring ranked choice voting to DC, which would be another huge improvement |
Yeah, I'm skeptical that there are a bunch of people who would vote in the primary but for some principled objection to registering as a Democrat, but RCV is a good idea. |
Agreed, RCV would actually move the needle here. No longer will worthless stuffed shirts like Anita Bonds skate through their primaries winning ~35% of the vote while the field splits the opposition vote. |
| Half the city council is nutty pseudo Green Party members that are far to the left of the electorate. We wouldn’t have this chasm between what the public wants and what our elected leaders want if we opened up the primary to independents. |
+1 |
+ another one. |
It’s even worse with ANC representatives. They get elected with eight votes and then spend their term giving their constituents the finger. |
You don't need to "open" primaries to independents. Just do jungle primary + run-off election (like California) or ranked choice voting (like Alaska). Get the parties out of the primary business. California and Alaska sent sensible moderates to Congress via these processes. |
