ADHD 1st grader—did you force reading out loud?

I agree that 20 minutes is too long. My child will just read me 1 book, which is often 5 minutes and I call it a day.

There’s no way I’d be doing that. One book before bed is plenty. Reading should be fun not a chore -mom of a 1st grader

I would never force reading out loud.

reading out loud has been critical for reading progress for our child, and we started when she wasn't even solid on CVC. Breaking up into shorter chunks is a good idea. And I agree, right after school and right before bed are both hard times.

No, goodness, I can't "force" my ADHD kids to do anything. I save the battles for brushing teeth and getting out the door on time.

I think that learning how to read aloud well can be a good skill but 20 minutes ugh. I can't read out lout for that long. It makes my voice scratchy and it's just not fun. And PP who said that it's difficult to read and comprehend is 100% correct. It's often an either/or situation.

Reading out loud is extremely useful for kids to improve their reading. You don-t need to set a timer though! Just let her pick a book she likes and read it to you. We read Green Eggs and Ham over and over in 1st grade. Pick books that are decodable so she's not trying to sound out extremely difficult words. Julia Donaldson books are great for that too because they all rhyme and are quite funny without a lot of words that she won't know how to read.
