Aftercare question

No because no personal devices for kids at our elementary. But they watch videos and do things on chromebooks, so there are screens. Lessons sometimes also projected onto a screen.

Bumping OP Here. I was wondering about elementary KAH in MCPS. Thanks.

Our aftercare does not (Bar-T) and no phones or devices allowed at school.

Ours does. I would ask the specific program though, I don't know if it's universal. I'm not thrilled with it but if I had the kids just come home on days I work from home while I'm still working, they'd be requesting to go on screens then too.

Our KAH location also does, but access to it is very limited. It's also done as a collaborative activity, e.g., four kids playing MarioKart together for one game, and then that's it for the day. They do *tons* of other activities, games, etc. Nothing is perfect, but I've been consistently impressed with KAH and all the services they offer. Their staff are well-trained and caring, they balance structure and free play well, etc.

Also, FWIW, they were very strict about no devices during their Adventure Camp (daily travel camp for older kids) this summer. So, as a company, screens are not something they rely on.

What does your aftercare do?

Our MCPS ES contracts with MCCA -- no screens allowed in our particular location UNLESS it's a non-school full-care day, in which case the kids are allowed to bring a small device from home and sometimes they do have a movie on those days. FWIW, I've been very happy with MCCA at our ES. No screens, engaging activities, the caregivers are really in tune with the individual kids, and they get homework assistance as well. I don't know if this is MCCA across the board though -- our ES is on the small side and I feel like there are a ton of kids with a SAHM or parents that routinely work from home. Our program isn't very crowded.

Bar-T runs our afterschool program, and they are awesome! Lots of physical games/playing outside, dance parties, crafts, along with time for homework. No screens. The kids seem to love it all!

This is also our experience with MCCA. Lots of arts and crafts, games, and activities. They are doing a variety show on Thursday when it's all day.
