Women in your 40s, share your skincare routine

I'm a woman with melanin in her skin and frequently mistaken for being in my 20's at almost 42. My skin care routine:

Wash face
sunscreen when I remember
try to sleep at a good hour
snack on chocolate

41 here. I feel like I am doing the minimum, but it works for me so far.

AM
-Wash with just water and washcloth (no cleanser in am to preserve skin mantle! I only cleanse with cleanser once a day—see PM. Got this tip from a derm)
-Lancôme Advanced Night Repair Serum (okay to use in day)
-Dr Jart cerimadin cream
-Colorscience mineral tint sunscreen
-BB cream if necessary for any blemishes not covered by tinted sunscreen

PM
-Oil based cleanser to take off sunscreen (usually Target or CVS brand wipes)
-L’Oréal PureClay cleanser to wipe off oil cleanser and any remaining makeup (two-step cleansing is KEY! I wish I learned this earlier)
-Lancôme Advanced Night Repair Serum as moisturizing base
-Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Eye Serum (it is made for eyes but I use all over bc it’s the only retinol I can tolerate)
-Dr Jart Cerimadin cream
-Glow Recipe watermelon face mask if I feel dry

I layer my retinol on top of a serum because I have sensitive skin. Then I seal in with an occlusive cream.

I tried fancy products from my dermatologist. Everything was either too strong or ineffective. I went back to my combo of drug store and “premium” products.

If my skin is feeling “rough” I exfoliate in the shower with St Ives. Use sparingly, St Ives is controversial.

Maintenance:
Light Botox for brow furrow and forehead lines. Light filler for nasolabial folds and lips.

All products listed are skinceuticals unless noted

AM: Cetaphil wash, CE ferulic, discoloration defense serum, moisturizer (sometimes Naturopathica calendula, sometimes triple lipid restore), Elta MD sunscreen.

PM: remove makeup with La Roche Posay effaclar micellar water, Cetaphil wash, retinol 1.0 then moisturizer. If I get sensitive, I drop the retinol to every other night.

Every week I add in a “fun” face mask (clay or naturopathica cherry/pumpkin - something that smells yummy) or overnight glycolic renew overnight treatment (I skip retinol those days).

+1

I’m almost 40 and switched to skinceuticals about a year ago and swear by it!

Not that poster, but I have one, too. It gets rid of the sun spots under my eyes / on my cheekbones very effectively. Also makes PIH go away faster.

The sunspots come back if I don’t use it for a week or so. But it only takes two/three weeks of use for them to go away again.

Morning - wash, eye serum, spot treat as needed, moisturize in winter / move straight to sunscreen in summer.

Evening - wash, eye serum, lip mask, and thick moisturizer.

Alternating days - retinal (skin can’t tolerate retinol) in PM, exfoliant, and a gentle scrub like Kiehls rare earth.

Injections - Botox in 11s and brows

I'm 41 and went to an expensive plastic surgeon in mclean to ask about prp. Granted I went after going to bed at 4am but still. She said that I needed no filler or botox in my face or prp but she'd suggest buccal fat removal. Why the heck would I want something that takes fat out (I'm 110lbs) when I lose weight I lose it all over even my face. If I went ahead with buccal fat removal I'd have a gaunt face if I lost weight.

Rich plastic surgeon lady was cray.

I agree with most of the posters here that products matter very little. You're going to look as old as your genes and diet dictate and skincare is just a small boost. The exceptions are sunscreen and tretinoin, both of which need to be used for years and are mostly preventative. Targeted change requires cosmetic work.

Wow guess I'm behind the curve. I've been on spironolactone for years for my acne. Other than that I don't really do anything special.

Wash my face in the AM with Rx sulfacetamide cleanser
30-40 SPF moisturizer daily
Occasionally a little eye cream at night
Exercise daily, keep my weight in check

I'm turning 42 and think I look pretty good. I'm half black so I'm sure that helps some. Last weekend 2 different people asked if I was in my 20s.

I'm 43 and my routine is very similar to many already posted here.

Morning:
Cleanser: Cetaphil Gentile Skin Cleanser (I've also used the Cerave Hydrating Cleanser and I like that as well)
Hydrating Toner: Currently I'm using Naturium Niacinamide Essence
Moisturizer: E.L.F. Holy Hydration Moisturizer
Sunscreen: I've used many different ones - currently I'm using the Neutrogena tinted mineral sunscreen SPF 30 which is ok but I don't love it. I apply sunscreen RELIGIOUSLY and always apply 1/4 of a teaspoon to my face and neck, and I reapply throughout the day especially if I will be outdoors. I also try to always wear a hat if outside for an extended period of time.

Evening:
Cleansing Balm: Clean It Zero cleansing balm (this is an important step to remove the mineral sunscreen, which doesn't come off with regular cleanser alone)
Cleanser: Cetaphil Gentile Skin Cleanser
Retinol: Tretinoin .1 percent
Moisturizer: E.L.F. Holy Hydration Moisturizer

I also get botox in my forehead and between my eyebrows every 4 months.

I've been following this skincare routine for the past five years and I think my skin looks pretty decent. (I started getting botox 3 years ago). I have literally no sunspots or melasma, which I attribute to the tretinoin and sunscreen. The botox has done a great job of smoothing out my forehead and the angry crease I used to have between my eyebrows. I do have smile lines which are genetic - I am not ready to pull the trigger on filler at this point. I think this is a pretty manageable and affordable routine and it keeps my skin looking basically as good as it can without spending major bucks on injectables and in-office procedures like lasers.

I am 43 and until recently had a very rigid and intense facial routine, including regular facials, masks, exfoliation, serums...

And then I had a candida outbreak on my face that would not go away and my dorm told me to ditch EVERYTHING.

I now use CeraVe hydrating cleanser morning and night, CeraVe moisturizer morning and night, and SuperGoop unscreen during the day.

That's it. And my face looks better than ever.

I am lucky enough to still have acne at the ripe old age of 46. So here's my regimen that has managed to keep both that and wrinkles under control:

oral - spironolactone, 100mg daily

AM - aczone, cerave moisturizer

PM - glycolic acid face wash, retin A gel

hydrogel patches for any emerging acne

I’m surprised your skin can tolerate a glycolic acid wash and retin A at the same time!
