Demon Copperhead
The Golem and the Jinni |
I believe "where to start" referred to giving a recommendation, which I have asked for. I like all kinds of genres, though I have a bit of a harder time with science fiction. "Read what you like" is generally good advice, but I asking for a something a little more specific. The poster below noted that Demon Copperfield, which has received rave reviews, is a slog at 600 pages. It's a great example of exactly what I am trying to avoid. I am asking for a book that was worth the pages. I'd consider medium to longish anything over 400 pages. |

East of Eden. Any multigenerational saga. |

Classics:
Anna Karenina Middlemarch Crime and Punishment War and Peace In Search of Lost Time More Recent: Children's Book by A.S. Byatt A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel Ducks, Newburyport by Lucy Ellman I'll think of more - I read lots of long books but I don't think of them as long if they are enjoyable, so they are hard to come up with for a list. |
I wouldn't consider David Copperfield a "slog" at all. If anything, it is an easy read for it's length given how entertaining it is. |
|
Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons (although given that you say you don’t love sci fi maybe not for you)
Anything by Dorothy Dunnett |
| I personally love 19th century epics, with Les Miserables at the top of the list. |
Seems to be some confusion here over which book is being discussed. David Copperfield or Demon Copperhead? |
| The Golden Bowl , Henry James |
| The Count of Montie Cristo. The Robin Buss translation. |
| The power broker |

The Love Songs of WEB Dubois

I loved that book and it didn’t feel long at all! |
+1 |
| NP who loved Kingsolver’s Demon Cooperhead. I was drawn in after the first sentence and felt transported completely into the narrator’s world. |
