A reminder for high school coaches who have their team run on the shared-use trails

A reminder for you as you get your teams ready for the season: When you send your charges out to do their distance training on the shared-use trails, please ask them to run no more than two individuals side-by-side. Multiple clusters of Washington-Liberty kids were running 5-across today as people were trying to bike into work during the morning commute.

Yes, it's nice to be able to relax and run your teams through the shared-use trails or on local streets while you take care of other things back at the school. It helps the kids build responsibility as the captains lead their teammates and get well-conditioned for the season. But you, HS Coach, do have to do your part and monitor your students to ensure that they actually conduct themselves responsibly on their runs.

I look forward to smoother rides over the next couple of weeks. Thank you!

Lmaooooooo people on bicycles complaining about slowing down the commute of other people. Gtfo you do it every damn day to drivers.

YES! Especially insufferable Arlington bikers.

If you ever lost on DCUM telling people to stop being disrespectful, expect disrespectful people to double down. Overgrown toddlers here.

Giving a polite reminder and not running them down with the bike is grace.

Seems like a great way to catch a beating, get arrested, and go viral

Too bad OP didn't try that. Implying someone is lazy, like OP did, isn't polite.

I run just about daily on Rock Creek Trail and certain times of the year see school teams running. I can confidently say I have never had an issue with any of the school teams. Dog walkers, bikers and walkers with zero self awareness is a totally different story.

On Thursday, the Cross Country practice switches to 3:45 to 5:15 pm, so plan your return bike accordingly.

OP said they were running five across, so obviously on both sides. Reading Is Fundamental (RIF).

DP, but if only they could “train a HS sport” and “be off devices, not causing problems” while NOT running five abreast and blocking a publicly funded trail being used by other people. Oh wait. Good news! They can.

OP, instead of posting on dcum, why not reach out to the school? It would be one thing to vent here if you didn't know what school they were from, but you do so just call the school.

Seriously?

Are bikers finding that when they ride towards the runners from the front, the runners aren't moving over to let them past? Because that is absolutely a legitimate complaint, and the coach should coach them on watching for oncoming traffic, and moving over when they see someone approaching.

Or are bikers complaining that when they come up behind them, the runner who are running the wrong direction on the left, aren't allowing them to bike the wrong direction on the left? Because bikers have pretty much made it clear that passing someone slower and more vulnerable than you in the same lane is wrong when you're on the road, so I don't see why they would expect to do it on a trail, and obviously if there is a group you can't safely pass them on the left.

If someone is using a shared use trail, and you find yourself behind them, you share the trail by slowing down and riding behind them.

There is no better sport than hating on bikers.

Why are you even posting on here? Can't you take a minute to email the school since you know the school name?
