They can go after K and they still choose not to attend BM. You can see in that link where most people go. |

This is a reason bilingual schools should be citywide. For everyone like you shut out of PK3 in BM, there are many more that never get the opportunity to attend a bilingual school because they don’t have the right address. To make it even worse, DCPS doesn’t offer these programs to the two largest Latino neighborhoods, Colombia Heights and Brightwood. |
We know a very nice native speaking family who left BM after ECE for an immersion charter. Both parents fluent in English and UMC. It’s not only the English dominant that don’t attend after K. |
I live in the neighborhood and UMC native speaking families are choosing immersion charters over BM. Not sure if the same happens at Powell. |
It’s like that at all the DCPS bilingual schools. Majority of families are ESL, low educated, and low income. The educated UMC hispanic families, who are also fluent in English, are congregating at the immersion charters. That’s why they have such low at risk numbers as compared to percentages oh Hispanic families at the school. |
We are a Black family and everyone at Powell seemed to be White or latino when we toured a few years ago. The only Black employees there were janitors or cafeteria workers. That was a no for us. |
At Powell there are in fact many black teachers and staff, principal, dean, counselor, many teachers. I think it depends what you think of as your baseline. And my expectations in a dual language school model is that some of the teachers are going to be white, and some are going to be black, but most are probably going to be of Latin origin, which includes a number of backgrounds but not necessarily in proportions that match those across the U.S./in DC, etc. |

I would choose stokes over Powell so you have a good chance of getting into DCI. Most UMCdamilies leave Powell and BM because they don’t want macfarland middle school. |
