| The summer my DD was 15 she was late to start looking and we didn’t know if she’d find anything but in early July she found a dishwashing job that she really enjoyed. Those kinds of positions turned over so quickly that especially in busy seasons they can be pretty much constantly looking for stuff. From there, she went on to some line cook jobs at a few different spots and in a food truck, and generally really enjoyed the esprit de corps of working in a kitchen. |
She bring anything like a resume? Some of the online applications wanted resumes. I told my son to bring references if we do this but is there anything else? |
| They can get certified to be soccer referees. When my daughter went through certification there was a girl in her class who hadn’t played soccer for years but figured she might as well make money while attending her siblings’ tournaments. |

go to all the local restaurants to see if they need busboys and apply in person.
restaurants are so short staffed, they can find one and be working next weekend |
| our pool in Arlington has a major staffing shortage starting in Arlington. I would think Bethesda would be the same. |

Try local retirement homes. My DS- about to turn 17- started working at his current job as a server at a local retirement home when he was 15. He started working in spring if his sophomore year and is now a riding senior. They are really flexible with his schedule and he enjoys making money year round. Good luck!

| Bakeries? Wegmans - those cart boys/girls if not a cashier |
My son tried to apply to Wegmans this week. They said the minimum age was 18! Maybe it’s just the one by us. |
A lot of places don't want to deal with hiring minors. |
^^ This. Also, the reason applicants are being redirected to apply online (at many places anyway) is that, as mentioned here already, AI is screening applicants -- virtually all of the retail jobs at the mall require personality testing. At the store where I worked at Tysons, AI placed people into the exceptional, acceptable, and unacceptable categories depending on how they did on the test -- and we were only allowed to hire from the "exceptional" pool, even though we sometimes desperately needed people and no applicants were getting "exceptional" on the test. |
| I saw a sign at our (Bethesda) pool with a QR code (sorry, I didn't take a pic) for a lifeguard test. Said MoCo Rec is still looking for lifeguards for the summer. Check Mocorec.com perhaps? |
| I have a dumb question ... how hard is it to pass the lifeguarding test? One of my kid's friends said they have to swim 12 laps, tread water for 2 minutes without their arms, and retrieve a brick from the bottom of the diving well. That seems reasonable, but I'm also not sure my kids could do it. They swim fine, but they were never swim team kids. I could try to get them to go to the pool to practice swimming 12 laps, but I can just imagine the pushback! |
That’s fascinating. Do you know how the tests work? What types of questions and answers make a candidate exceptional? |
They have to do it w/o goggles which was a deal breaker for DD. And it wasn't clear if they had to do all the swim portion at once and w/o rest. For example, can you take 10 min to catch your breath after swimming laps in under X minutes before you have to go tread water. |
