Transferring Sophomore Year

If your dd is already thinking about transferring before she starts freshman year, perhaps she should take a gap year? I do have a kid who transferred but wasn’t even thinking about it until sophomore year. She went into freshman year thrilled about her choice.

The school is High Point. She loved it on her campus tour and was really torn between HPU and JMU which she ended up accepting. She just chose her dorm on Friday and is really excited about JMU but is wondering "what if". I told her she can always reevaluate in the spring but I'm just wondering if schools hold it against you if you did not originally accept their offer. Who really knows, right?

Most people I know who went to JMU loved it. I’ll bet she won’t want to transfer once she spends some time there.

This.

Why do parents even worry about such stuff when their kid hasn’t even started day 1 of college?

One thing that is likely to happen is her to find the transition to college hard and romanticize High Point as better bc - insert tons of untrue reasons. As a parent help your DD understand that if she attended high point should would have the exact same transition and struggle and don’t give the immediate out of transferring. Start out with the goal of completing one year and then considering transfer options for 2nd semester sophomore year

There should be no problem transferring into High Point University as a sophomore as the school loses about 20% of each freshman class (first year retention rate is about 80%).
