Is it hard to get an A in summer classes?

I wonder if I should plan on getting him a tutor to do the class with. That way he will really learn it and not just speed through and still earn the A.

(We are only considering this because we moved to MCPS mid-year and he is self-conscious about being behind his classmates. He’s actually a strong math student).

Could he take two math classes - geometry and algebra 2 — during the school year?

Most kids retake the course because they failed, so if they showed up to pass they will pass, they will need to do a lot of work to pass with A. Most of the students will pass with with C

My son is taking Health A currently. It is a pretty easy class content wise, but very time consuming. Not only while doing the numerous assignments, but also if you actually watch all the videos in the module. He goes through each module and watches the content, but he knows most kids just skip to the assignments and don't watch the videos. But anyway, it takes him at least three hours a day - often four or five to get through each day's work. I can't imagine doing a full subject course like geometry. It must be very challenging to mostly learn that on ones own unless it is in person. That might change the dynamic a bit. All being said, my student has an A in Health A so far, and has liked doing it during the summer, but for a more advanced class like a math one - it could be tough!

My child’s high school offers it in person so that is something to look into. I do not know how many schools offer it, but in person seems way better than trying to learn it through videos and occasional teacher check-ins. It is a long class- 4 1/2 hours a day- though they do have a lunch break. He likes the teacher and the class and is not struggling at this point. With 2 days left of the 1st semester, my child does have a strong A.

If you do go the virtual routs through the central program, I think a tutor sounds like a good idea- maybe an hour a day to clarify any questions and help with pacing. The summer program expects about a week’s worth of learning every single day. Also, don’t put pressure about earning an A- a B with that kind of condensed learning is not bad at all.

Which schools offer it in person? Can kids register for in person class if they are not a student at the school?

An A is doable! It all depends on the kid and how much work they are willing to put in. My kid is doing magnet Geometry and doing excellent. With a strong A so far with two days to go for first semester. It is all online and self-pace. Covid online learning taught this kid how to learn on her own. It is lots of work I must say. I would say about 3-4 full hours a day. I owe this kid a good vacation after this class. At least before school starts again.

It doable but there is going to be a lot of work and studying involved. Think 3-5 hrs per day per class. Your trying to condense a semester or who year class into a much shorter amount of time.

My kid had same teacher during school year and got as easy high A. In summer they barely squeaked out a low A. It just moves much faster. DC put in the work.

Was this in person or virtual? How many hours did your child put in a day?

Virtual for both. I don’t remember hours but DC is a hard worker.

He had all A’s until then but ended up getting a C in each of these the last quarter so his gpa took a big hit. I’m definitely concerned about him taking both of these at the same time even though I think he grasps the concepts fairly well.

Health was a lot of work last summer and it was only one class and content was easy.

Does anyone else have a child doing two glasses at once? One is 4 hours in person. Other class is 75 minutes a night online. I’m told 4 hours a day of studying for Spanish alone.

Serious question - did he want to retake them on his own, or are you making him? Because I know someone who is forcing their kid to retake 2 classes because they didn’t like his grade and I was completely blown away.

Well the parent brought it up in conversation - clearly they wanted me to know.

My kid retook two classes last summer that he originally got Cs in and got As in the summer classes which replaced the Cs on his transcript and helped his GPA.

How bad could the teachers have been if your son earned As in the first three quarters? So sick of the teacher scapegoating on this board.
