Struggling with safety choices

We've done some visits to safeties this summer, but nothing really got him excited. He'd like small, with a close-knit, driven community, preferably with a military slant and/or ROTC. Preferably not in the DMV. Nothing Corps of Cadet-like like VMI or Texas A&M.

1340 SAT, 33 ACT, 3.8 uGPA, 4.3 wGPA.

Where should we be looking, and what programs? He would like engineering but is ok with something non-STEM (government, maybe) for the right cultural fit. He has the GI Bill, but we still need to be reasonable with costs.

University of Denver is small but also has ROTC and is not as selective as some other schools. It might work really well for him.

Yea I too think posts like these are hindered by an OP’s refusal to identify the school being considered. The risk of the OP being “outed” is minuscule. Without identify the school being considered responders are forced to fly blind and start throwing around one bullshit random school after another - which is exactly what’s happening here.

OP has another long thread (maybe in Teens forum) about her son’s desire to go to a specific military academy, and she is afraid he won’t get in (although he meets qualifications) so would like to prevent him from aiming for it so he doesn’t experience the disappointment of being rejected. In that thread both OP and their son came some ways in being open to other schools and trying not to catastrophize the impact of being rejected.

OO’s DS was not admitted to summer program at naval academy so worried he won’t be admitted.
How about Trinity College? Easier admit, leans conservative.

Maritime schools (Mass Maritime, Maine Maritime, there is a SUNY as well?)

Yes, SUNY Maritime College. Additionally, CSU Maritime Academy.

Unfortunately, his stats are too low for Webb Institute, an extremely small Marine Engineering-focused college.

Ok. Yea there’s nothing quite like the Naval Academy. He’s not gonna be happy no matter where he ends up if his heart is set on that. He’s just gonna have to adjust. Which he will.

It's the USCGA.

These are all safeties:
U of MN
Temple
Duquesne
Holy Cross

Holy Cross does not belong with these other schools — not a safety.

MN has nothing in common with anything.

Not sure what your kids wualifications are but here are some that might be a fit with good engineering departments:

Marquette
Union
Worcester polytechnic
Stevens
ASU/UofA
Bucknell

Some of these might be targets rather than safeties.

It's the USCGA.

Whittier and University of Redlands meet the criteria and are both designated Hispanic Serving Institutions, which makes their students eligible for the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (which is kinda like ROTC for the Coast Guard).

They have to enlist for that, right?
