I really can’t believe the positions some people on this forum put themselves in with regards to travel. |
| Why can't you just eat vegan for a week? |
|
Might be a good way for u guys to try vegan food.
Communication ahead of time is key here. |
| Honestly, vegan is very hard to accommodate when eating out. Vegetarian is a lot simpler. I would open a dialog with the other family early about their expectations. But I would lean toward everyone doing their own thing except for maybe one or 2 nights. Then maybe you could do pasta/sauce and taco bar (beef and beans) that could accommodate both families. |

I am surprised that neither family has communicated on this issue, OP. Most restaurants do not have vegan options. Will each family eat separately? Are you sharing a kitchen? What are everyone's food expectations? If anyone has a nut allergy, then a lot of vegan options won't work. |
The point of a vacation is to have fun, and not being able to have ice cream, seafood, grilled meats, etc. is no fun. |
I don’t understand why it’s an issue? Just discuss beforehand (which is necessary even if people are not vegan, as people have different preferences), eat plenty of separate meals if need be, whatever. Vacationing together does not mean joined at the hip for every meal. |
| Radical vegans are annoying and ruin everything. |
I'm a former vegan. I would never expect someone to be vegan for a week on vacation! It isn't always easy and options are much more limited. Not exactly what someone wants to do on vacation. Anyways OP, you need to talk with the family. I'd plan on doing a couple dinners together and a couple dinners on your own. They should be responsible for finding restaurants that can accommodate them as even things as simple as a veggie pasta dish often aren't vegan. |
Why can’t the vegans eat meat for a week? See how this works? |
It sounds "so uncomfortable" that someone else eats differently than you? Why do you care at all what other people eat? I've been vegetarian on and off for years and have not made a huge deal about it. I will basically go to any restaurant and be able to find at least one thing to eat. If I'm in Maine and my husband really wants lobster, we get lobster and I eat other things. If we were at a beach house with another family, I would probably only mention my specific need as pertains to real situations - "What do you and the kids eat for breakfast?" "Scrambled eggs and bacon." "Oh, my kids are vegetarian so they won't eat the bacon. Do your kids want pancakes?" People on this forum have a special hatred for anyone who has dietary restrictions, pretty much for any reason. I just truly do not understand why it's so uncomfortable to be with people who eat different things than you. Do you feel that way about any other lifestyle decision, PP, or is it really just about food? |
You can go out for ice cream. Could also agree to split for a couple of dinners and maybe lunches. |
The vegans that are the subject of this post don't appear to be "radical vegans" nor are they ruining anything. |
Sorbet is awesome, you can grill tons of veggies as well as some fruits, and you can grill tofu. Surely you can't be so stupid as to think vegan people don't have fun on vacations. |
Apologies, I should have ended my post with "to me." Doing without those food is no fun TO ME. Therefore I would never "just eat vegan for a week." Also tofu is just wretched. |
