I heard they can't and only the governor or legislature has the authority. Can you cite the law that makes you believe otherwise?

It was already cited above: MD. Education Code § 3-901

Op should email/ tweet her asking for clarification. She seems like a reasonable woman so if there is a misunderstanding or if you educate her, it’s a win.

And/or what made the county council start talking about what the rules are?

You shouldn't. This is only for people who live in Montgomery County and have children in MCPS.

I am both of those things, and I have no idea why I should care.

Me too, and I am also wondering about that.

Evidently the OP wants the County Council to remove a member of the Board of Education, for some reason? The County Council has lawyers. I expect the County Council's lawyers to know these things. That's what the lawyers are for. I don't expect County Council members to know these things, out of the blue. I'm pretty far into the weeds on county politics and processes, and I didn't know it.

You don't expect much from the Councilmembers who sit on the Education Committee. Why should they know their job? No reason. They are just there to collect a paycheck.

It's their job to know that the County Council has the authority to remove a member of the Board of Education? Alrighty then.

It's their job to know their job. But don't expect much, don't get much. Happy MoCo voters.

This is the weirdest thread. What even is the alleged or implied immorality, misconduct, incompetency or willful neglect of duty? And if there isn't any, then what is the point of this conversation?

Someone wants to fire up the cultural wars here.
