Going abroad for 1 year—when to tell school?

I think you'd have better luck at a K-8. There is always attrition in the Upper Grades so they maybe a little more accommodating. Pretty sure any school will ask "What happens if you decide not to return?" They will protect themselves... maybe half tuition..

DC goes to school with a student who swaps years (one year here in the US, one year abroad in Europe). School requires family to pay full tuition for the off years to hold the spot (DC knows this and told me because kid in question told them).

Wait until you're accepted and then tell them along with affirming your commitment to pay tuition during the gap year. I think it will be fine so long as you're up front about your plans to pay tuition while you're away and committed to returning after 1 year.

Sounds like a great experience.
