CS Internships for Summer 2024

It’s hard but not impossible to land an internship. Easiest path is diversity programs but otherwise you just need to apply everywhere from August onwards and try for referrals from connections. In terms of skill set you really need to focus on the coding interview (leetcode).

Have your kid look into Google step, Microsoft explore, Amazon propel, and meta university. In previous years, the applications opened in October.

These are really popular and competitive internships for rising sophomores and juniors only. They pay really well - $43/hr, 40 hours a week, for 8 weeks a few years ago. (Yes for 19yo)

Your kid doesn’t need to “do” anything extra. For the Google internship they need to have taken calculus in the entry computer science class. I have heard that kids that go in with too much knowledge or not what they’re looking for. They want to get students into their labor pipeline early and train them and get them bought into the brand and offer them return offers in subsequent years. The programs encourage under represented minorities in tech to apply but my daughter says there were actually a lot of white and Asian males in her cohort as well.

These companies also have regular software developer internships that they offer arising juniors and seniors. Getting into the freshman programs is definitely a boost and guaranteed entry into the later programs and for the right (or lazy) student that getd into the program as. Freshman can coast and return each summer and get a guaranteed job after graduation.

It is hard to get an internship freshman year. I used to interview potential interns and even the freshman with previous experience weren’t a great fit because they generally didn’t write *good* code as they were self taught.

If the school offers it and they’re considering grad school at all they could look into undergraduate research opportunities. It doesn’t pay well but you can learn a lot (including if academia/research is right for you) and it looks good on a resume.

OP are you asking for classes now? GMu (volgenau school of engineering) and VCU have summer coding and software classes. My DD was camp counselor at one of them. He could pick a course he feels he’s weak in and bone up now. How is he set with calculus?

My neighbor who is an SES in the government helped my rising HS senior got an IT help desk job with one of the government’s contractors where she works. The job pays $30/hr. It is all about networking.
