Sour Smelling (Clean) Laundry - Help Please

Add oxiclean powder and stop using the “sanitizer,” that’s a scam.

How is it a "scam"?

It's your detergent. It molded the machine.

Wipe the machine down with pure vinegar, including wiping all in the rubber area.

Run an empty load with like 3 cups of vinegar on hot. If you can't run it empty, use a couple towels.

Then, switch to Sal Suds as your detergent. I use 1.5 tablespoons per load in the normal soap dispenser. I use less, 1 tablespoon, for small loads.

Leave door open after loads.

THE END.

Sal Suds might be in the cleaning aisle rather than laundry aisle

OP here - I don't think that's it. Even with scented detergents that sour smell comes out if the clothing has been left sitting in the washer a long time. I know this because in the past on occasion, when I've forgotten that the clothes are sitting, that sour smell would be there even with the scented detergent.

all clothes stink if you let them sit wet for a day

OP here. I don't have mold in my machine, I can assure you. I am very careful with it. I clean the rubber gasket once a week with a sanitizing wipe. I leave the door open when not in use. After each cycle I dry out the tub with a towel. Now, I am currently running a vinegar "tub clean" cycle to see if that will help. I'll look into Sal Suds, have never heard of it.

I swear by this to keep my machine clean. I’ve had the same problem in the past. To be fair, the house smells like we have an indoor pool for a day, but it works

I do not let them sit! In my original post I said this. I am very careful to not let clothing sit 99.9% of the time. On the rare occasion when I have forgotten, yes I get that the clothes will smell sour but this is a rare ocurrance where they sit in the washer.

It’s totally unnecessary. Your clothes don’t need “sanitizing” and the heat from the dryer will do it anyway. The detergent and water does a fine job too. This is just something they invented to sell during Covid.

Do you have a drain plumbing problem, such as a drain needs to be snaked or the roof vent is clogged by leaves?

Not that I'm aware of. But how would I know if I had this issue - what signs should I look for?

As others have mentioned, run a cycle with 3 cups vinegar and hot water.

I found that my clothes stopped smelling and were cleaner when I stopped using pods and scent boosters. I now use liquid
detergent, oxiclean, and liquid softener.

Also, every now and then I do a full rinse of the drawer in which you fill liquid detergent, bleach and softener. Keep putting water and vinegar until globs of dried product comes out in the drum. Use affresh tablets to also do a tub clean.

Less detergent, scent booster, softener. More Oxiclean. A double rinse cycle - for each load.
