Airline seating

The agents claimed that the issue is that I made the reservation with United miles, so the system won't allow them to make any changes. It seems kind of ridiculous that there isn't a work around.

Lucky you! That trick is getting harder and harder to do (finding partner award space.)

We flew air Canada as a family last summer. Our flight was changed at the last minute and our family was spread all over the flight. They do not seats families together. We got lucky in that my son got an aisle seat near the front so the guy who had the middle seat next to me was more than happy to switch.

Ugh, op, I’m sorry. This would stress me out too. I don’t have experience to add other than I literally was planning to book a trip on Air Canada too with United miles and then saw if I wanted a seat, I’d need to buy that from Air Canada in addition, which was ridiculous because a regular economy seat entitles me to advance seat selection. The double dipping irritated me so much I abandoned the plan and didn’t book the flight. If they say they hold back certain seats for families then I don’t understand why they can’t assign them now. Why would they need to wait?

We had assigned seats and then we didn’t and ended up with 1/1/2. We put husband as the 1, me and the 7yo as the 2, and the 10 yo as the 1. Ironically the 10 yo ended up seated next to a friends grandparents so it worked out. But yes so frustrating when you do everything right and the airlines have other plans.

This is an issue with free United tickets on air Canada. You should be ok if you check in asap. But after having the same issue I no longer book free tickets in AC. I haven’t been able to find the permanent work around.

Other star alliance don’t have same issue. I find it’s pretty specific to the limited partnership btwn AC and UA.

Check flyertalk.com forum. This is documented there.
