Furniture put together and being out of state

We went with ours and helped but it together with her and boyfriend. I think it really depends on the "engineering" type mind of the person putting it together.

Yes but then you can use the tools again the next time furniture assembly comes up. And for someone just starting out, furniture assembly will come up a lot over the years. As will other things that require a hammer, screw driver, wrench, pliers.

Add a plunger

+1000 Better for her to start learning how to do things on her own. Life skills.

I’ve never assembled a bed.

They left furniture and dirt and food in fridge etc. my DD wants to order furniture on Wayfair and have it shipped to the rental house. I do you think it is a good idea to hire someone to move in clean, put together the furniture (desks, barstools, beds, chairs and sofa). As well as clean carpets and fix any small things? She moves in August so I have time. Or are kids responsible for assembling their own stuff? I want to try to make it easier for her.

Why is she taking possession of an uncleaned rental? That is the landlord's responsibility.

Landlords that rent to college students are slumlords & don’t care

I'd pay for professional cleaning, send a bill and tell them if they don't pay, you're going to sue in the jurisdiction where your kid signed the lease and they can pay an attorney in Arlington to fight it if they choose.

Take pictures of the uncleaned state of the apartment and note any damage. Tell the landlord how much it will cost to have cleaners come in and that the cost of cleaning will be deducted from first month's rent.

No roommates who live locally and have a family member that can lend a hand? I think Wayfair offers a white glove option on easier things to assemble. This is why I refused to let my daughter live off campus and insisted on college-owned apartment with dingy rental furniture. It was bad enough paying the school to store her belongings each year. Opposite coasts for us.

OP’s daughter’s living arrangement will ease her transition to post-college life. Most college-owned apartments kick you out during every break. Maybe your child’s doesn’t. But OP’s child will know how to navigate applying for a rental, dealing with a landlord, cleaning and transporting furniture. She will be able to easily stay where her college is over the summers, during spring & fall breaks and return to campus earlier after Christmas if she desires to. She’ll also be able to stay in the area after graduation if she wants to. Not to mention, having a rental history in that area.

The owner acknowledged the prior tenants should have cleaned, removed their stuff and fixed light fixtures, cleaned carpet, etc. he isn’t doing it. Prior tenants should have…so I guess it is my kid or hiring someone.

Oof. She’s in for a rude awakening if this is how things are starting with this landlord. Gonna be a long year.

They should rent a dumpster.

OP - she learns many lessons, good for going forward with leases and there will be many. Important that you do not do much to solve these problems
