Read the uncompensated 1 star reviews on TrustPilot and check their accreditation with the Better Business Bureau BEFORE getting duped into paying for expensive packages in full, upfront. Buyer beware. |
Yeah I think this is true. It is obviously harder, but the best option. I’ve heard that about kimono and Mathnasium, so we did Russian School and it was just packet work in class, packet work at home. |
^ Kumon, not kimono. Lol |
My kids go to Kumon because it is the closest option. It’s a 10 minute drive. My kids love the center director and enjoy going because they use a lot of small/silly rewards. |
Another plug for Kumon. They encourage the kids to go twice a week when they first start up so they can get real one on one time. As kids progress, yes, they work more independently and they do worksheets everyday. But my sons have been doing it since they were 5 and are in 2nd grade now and it’s helped them tremendously. They’re onto simple division which I think isn’t taught at MCPS for at least another year, and it gives them a ton of confidence in math and reading at school. |
+1 for doing the math with them yourself. I know we are all tired, but my son is just not going to pay attention at one of those places.
We use Komodo nightly and that’s worked for us! |
These programs are all gimmicks. Just do math with your kid every day. You don’t have so spend a ton of time. Just do 20 min per day. Buy some math books and get to it |
Some kids will do math with patents at home, but some other kids will not.
The centers are very helpful for the families with kids who refuse to cooperate with parents on this at home. |
Gifted kids don’t need all of these tutors, especially in elementary school. |
Maybe, but there are some kids who need more reinforcement. |
We do beast academy at home. It's fine. Kid is above grade level in a couple math areas, on grade level in the rest. On track for honors math in middle. That's enough for us.
Kid likes math and us good at it but not some kind of savant. I think some parents are looking for an unrealistic level of acceleration. Our kid reads 3-4 grades above grade level which is not ultra common but also there are several kids in the grade doing this. There are NO kids doing math 3-4 grades above grade level. Math doesn't work that way unless your kid is a math whiz which mine is not. |
We do Kumon |
Some kids attend the programs in order to be challenged, espcially programs like RSM and AoPS. I don’t believe RSM has materials that they sell. DS has a textbook that he uses with RSM but it is on the student portal. |
I would just hire a tutor. |
We just do math at home. |
