United Basic...no point in upgrading if only middle seats are available right?

Economy basic can not choose a seat. It is assigned.

You can select a seat after buying a basic economy fare on United. You just have to pay for it. I do it all the time.

How much is it? The difference between economy and basic is usually $30-40, isn’t it the same as the seat selection price?

I find it cheaper to select seat after Basic Economy purchase. As stated earlier in thread, you don’t accumulate PQP, or whatever United calls it these days, as quickly.

I wouldn't. I would just let the chips fall where they may in that case. Some other seats might open up later.

This happened to me on a recent United flight. $50 to select my seat and it was all middle seats. No way am I paying for that. Or I could pay $150 a leg to upgrade to economy plus and select a seat there. A few aisle or window seats in that category. It felt like a real scam and I didn't bother (was traveling alone)
