Both of my 5th graders teachers have told us to prepare for our son/daughter to be on the computer all day starting next year! We’re currently exploring leaving the county for this and other negatives we keep hearing about their middle school. I will say they are on a good bit of the day in elementary now so I don’t know. Will probably just be more of the same of what they have this year.

I teach MS in FCPS and am shocked at some of the stuff the elementary teachers tell my son will happen when he goes to middle school.

“We give homework every night to prepare you for middle school where you will have an hour or two of work every night.”
“If you are late 3 times in middle school you get detention”
“Don’t sign up for honors unless you are okay with Bs and Cs, no one gets all As in honors.”

None of these things are true. The elementary teachers truly don’t know what happens in the middle schools. When we do vertical articulation meetings, middle school meets with high school, we never get to share with elementary feeders.

All this to say, take what they are saying with a grain of salt. Speak to neighborhood kids who attend the middle school and find out their real experiences.

This was our experience as well. The teachers actually were so wrong about middle school.

They are wrong because middle school is a complete joke, and not hard or strict at all.

Have you been in the classrooms to observe? I'm just wondering how you know what goes on in the classes. My kid tells me very little.

My kids and their friends tell me everything, whether I want to know or not. My kids screen shot their daily agendas just to show me how lame and boring it is. Also they have straight A’s and do no homework or studying. They are both smart, but no Doogie Housers or anything. It’s way too easy.

What school?

Are they allowed to be late and show up to class when ever they want?

When I went to middle school 2006-2008, I would get in trouble if I came to class late, I guess now days they are allowed to come to class when ever they want and nothing happens to them if they are late....We should being back consequences to the school system. I guess middle school changed since a lot, and they are treating middle schoolers like little kids and not teenager's as they should, I am not sure if my heart beaks when I hear this, or its the Monster I been drinking.
