If you let your dog sit at the window and bark the entire day...why?

If it was all day long, it would bother me, too, OP.

I have two unusually quiet dogs. I’d go bonkers (even more so, I suppose) if they barked all day.

+1. They probably have a very social dog that’s home alone all day.

My neighbor’s dog does this. In my neighbor’s case it’s a combination of a poorly trained dog and her mother, who has developed dementia, always draws the dog’s attention to whatever is happening outside. I don’t think people understand in general that they’re supposed to train their dogs.

How would you know unless you have nothing better to do than spy on your neighbors

You think people can only hear barking dogs when they’re spying on their neighbors? That’s absurd. If you sincerely believe that, you need to be evaluated for hearing loss.

My dog is the opposite (from what I understand from others). He barks at every passing squirrel, dog, person when we are home, but not when we are away. If someone comes up the walk, he will bark regardless of whether we are home or not.

My neighbor has two small dogs who bark a LOT (which drives me insane), but thankfully not all day. She describes it as "happy barks" and that tells me everything I need to know about her level of tolerance for the noise vs. mine.

City living so we all have to put up with one another and this is part of it. The alternative is to get a house with some land and distance between me and my neighbors and that's not happening.

Now if you want to pick up my mortgage payment, taxes, etc. perhaps we could have a conversation. Incidentally, did you know the number one deterrent to a break in is a barking dog? Yeh, not going to tell my dog to be quiet for you or anyone else. Get some noise cancelling headphones. My dog hates people like you.

It *is* OP’s business because the sound is filling up HER home, how can you not see that? You can’t even meet a neighbor halfway and try to have a civil conversation about it? Do you think your dog is happy if it’s barking ALL DAY LONG?

Well, OP, if you live in Fairfax County, you can call in a noise complaint: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/code/sites/code/files/assets/documents/pdf/animal-noise.pdf Sad this has to exist, but I guess there are too many inconsiderate jerks like PP above.

We have two large dogs, they do this, and I’m very happy to let it happen.

It discourages solicitors and potential intruders, and as a bonus it annoys neighborhood busybodies. Doesn’t bother me at all.

I like my home to be a peaceful refuge from noise pollution. I specifically chose a breed that is quiet because I don’t like the sound of barking dogs. I’m thrilled that my boy doesn’t bark at humans or other animals.

This forum. I swear.

If only training existed. Or problem solving, like shutting the dog out of the area with the front window if it triggers barking all day. I swear.

People like OP often exaggerate. Give them an inch and they’ll take the mile.

Why don’t you try the anti bark collars? It really works.

You don’t get it. They like their dog’s barking. It’s unpleasant to our ears, but they want their dogs to bark. They have no incentive to stop it.

OP, you could try a dog whistle.
