It's smart if you apply it only to Title I schools, but it's incredibly unfair if you are, for example, an Asian family at a high SES school. |
I don’t necessarily think it’s a good way to handle things, but I don’t really see how it is unfair. It doesn’t affect acceptance to the program, just who is “in pool”. Most parents at high SES schools are well aware of AAP and will parent refer whether their kid is in pool or not. It’s their way of making sure kids who are low SES, whose parents are not so aware of AAP, who would benefit from AAP are not left out of the process. |
For AAP, what does being Asian have to do with it? I don't think they consider race, do they? It's smart because it acknowledges that kids from poorer communities have had less educational advantages by second grade, but if they are at the top ten percent of their school they probably still have enormous potential. Nothing wrong with that. |
They do consider race. There is a "diversity" component that no one talks about but everyone knows about. |
They should do the top x% for in pool at low SES. But it absolutely affects who gets accepted. You don’t think the schools know which kids they should be giving good GBRS to and who they should only give marginal GBRS? Kids who meet a certain profile will absolutely get the better GBRS and work samples and if you’re ‘just another smart Asian kid’ they won’t waste time or resources to produce good work samples or write a good GBRS. |
I'll just tell you that we did an experiment. One of my mixed race children has Asian + Caucasian checked on all her school forms, the other one has Caucasian only. They had very similar NNAT/COGAT and grades, but only the Caucasian one got into AAP. |
